Getting Housing Built in Non-metropolitan communities

Smaller, non-metropolitan communities – those with populations of less than 10,000 – make up 83% of Colorado’s municipalities and 33% of the population calls one home. Yet much of the focus on housing, from developers and finance institutions, is on our larger metro areas. In this webinar, we will discuss the challenges to housing in smaller communities, and ways that local leadership can address the issue.

Clark Anderson, Executive Director for Community Builders, will discuss the importance of aligning a planning and policy framework to allow for smaller, diverse housing types, and creating increased capacity (financial and institutional) at the local and regional level. Finally, we will discuss the best practices regarding incentives, subsidies, regulations, start up funding and a model for sustained funding.

Willa Williford, is a housing consultant, assisting high cost communities with strategic planning, market analysis, and development of housing for local residents. Willa’s experience includes housing development, finance, and asset management in both the public and private sectors. Prior to becoming a consultant, she served as Housing Director for Boulder County, where she was responsible for adding 500 new affordable homes, and developing financially sustainable, results oriented programs and policies. Willa holds a Masters of Urban and Regional Planning from University of Colorado at Denver, and a BA from Reed College in Portland OR.
