With the 2019 General Session of the State Legislature upon us, many affordable housing professionals are wondering what potential changes in policy and legislation that will affect their day-to-day work. It can be confusing to locate policy information and intimidating to approach your legislators and spread the news. We want you to feel empowered to be an effective advocate to political leaders and to your community. This webinar will discuss how to take an active approach to advocacy.

For advocacy at the state level, we will discuss the following: how to initiate conversation with your elected officials; how to effectively give an elevator speech and talk about the policies that impact your organization; and how establish a long term relationship and position yourself as a valuable resource. For advocacy within your community, we will discuss how Housing Colorado can help provide you with information to send to your networks, such as communication resources, bill reports. legislative alerts, and more. Armed with the right skills, attendees will be surprised to learn how accessible state lawmakers are and how easy it can be to effectively communicate your organization’s needs.

Our Speakers: 

Elena Wilken 
Housing Colorado's Executive Director, Elena Wilken has over 15 years in nonprofit management and deep connections to local officials throughout the state of Colorado. Prior to coming to Housing Colorado, Elena was the Executive Director of Colorado Association of Transit Agencies, and her proudest accomplishment was working with a statewide coalition to pass transportation funding legislation. She has a robust advocacy background, and looks forward to sharing her knowledge and experience with the housing community. 

Gayle Berry
A former Colorado State legislator, Gayle Berry now represents interests on behalf of a diverse range of clients as a contract lobbyist and government affairs consultant.  During her eight year tenure in the legislature, Gayle was a member of the powerful Joint Budget Committee, the House Appropriations Committee, and was chair of the House Transportation Committee. Gayle received more than thirty awards for her work as a legislator. She has been named to three state-wide commissions by three governors, both as a legislator and a lobbyist.  In the fifteen years since forming a lobbying firm, Gayle’s relationships both with State decision makers and operations staff have proven invaluable for clients such as Housing Colorado who provide services to citizens and professionals throughout the state of Colorado.

Amber Valdez
Amber is a partner of Valdez Public Affairs, LLC and has worked with the Colorado General Assembly for ten years.  Ms. Valdez has a BA in Political Science from Colorado State University and a Master's in Public Administration from the University of Colorado-Denver. Ms. Valdez has successfully represented over fifteen clients, including national firms, Colorado entities, local governments, small business, and non-profit organizations. Her clients express their appreciation for Ms. Valdezs ability to communicate and keep them informed in this fast-paced and ever-changing political environment and her ability to represent their issues before members of the General Assembly.
