2020 – 2022 Strategic Initiatives


LENS
: Evaluate all programming, events, and communications to ensure that Housing Colorado is diverse, equitable and inclusive.   

TOOLS: Use outreach and communications to implement initiatives.  

SUSTAINABILITY: Stress test financials and business model to ensure sustainability

Strategic Initiatives:
  1. By 2022, Housing Colorado will increase its advocacy effectiveness at the state level.  
  2. By 2022, Housing Colorado will maintain the annual Housing Colorado Conference as the premier housing event in Colorado while maintaining the current culture and feel. 
  3. By 2022, Housing Colorado will build and implement strategy to empower local and regional housing advocacy groups to further affordable housing policies and projects in their communities.  
  4. By 2022, Housing Colorado will develop and implement a leadership development program for affordable housing professionals.
  5. By 2022, Housing Colorado will augment its annual calendar of networking and convening events to include young professionals, rural housing professionals, and housing professionals from diverse backgrounds.  
  6. By 2022, Housing Colorado will continue to offer resources on the benefits of affordable housing to elected officials, local advocacy groups, and other housing stakeholders.  

2020 Plan 

1. Increase Housing Colorado’s advocacy effectiveness at the state level.

  • Draft policy priority filter with legislative committee.
  • Educate legislators on benefits of affordable housing and effective policies. Convene legislators at Legislative Luncheon.  
  • Engage on housing-related legislation.
  • Work on statewide anti‐growth campaign.
  • Develop Federal connections.
  • Identify key organizations and build relationships with “Who benefits from housing” groups such as education, transportation, healthcare, economic development, employers, criminal justice.

2. Maintain the annual Housing Colorado Conference as the premier Colorado housing event while maintaining the current culture and feel.  

  • Using similar process to 2019, select sessions that appeal to target audience.  
  • Build financial analysis of conference registration, sponsorships, etc.   
  • Engage Board of Directors to solicit additional sponsorships. 
  • Refine scholarship program to ensure diverse attendance. Double scholarship fund and seek sponsorship.  

3. Build and implement strategy to empower local and regional housing advocacy groups to further affordable housing policies and projects in their communities.  

  • Rewrite Editorial Committee’s charter to include messaging and communications strategy.
  • Recruit Editorial Committee members with PR and messaging experience.
  • Survey existing resources (DOH and CHFA).
  • Develop community-specific messaging tools.
  • Seek opportunities to attend meetings of local housing advocacy groups
  • Explore opportunity for Speakers Bureau to testify on local projects at city council meetings, local housing advocacy groups, etc.

4. Develop and implement a leadership development program for affordable housing professionals.  

  • With Young Professionals Committee, develop annual calendar of events and education. 
  • Provide resources for leadership development program: guidelines, recommended programs, etc.  

5. Augment annual calendar of networking and convening events to include young professionals, rural housing professionals and housing professionals from diverse backgrounds.  

  • With Education committee, plan and execute calendar of events that will be attractive to young professionals, rural housing professionals, and housing professionals from diverse backgrounds.
  • Plan networking events outside the Denver metro area.
  • Continue with webinars and successful events. 

6. Provide resources on the benefits of affordable housing to elected officials, local advocacy groups, and other housing stakeholders.  

  • Publish housing data report.
  • Gather and publish materials that highlight accomplishments and impact of housing dollars.
  • Pursue opportunities for additional research and publications, ideally in partnership with other organizations.
  • Provide members with messaging to promote affordable housing.
  • Redo website: mobile friendly, more relevant material, easier to navigate. Use Editorial Committee.
  • Maintain membership model and improve processes and programs.
